Internet megastar, celebrity to the celebrities, and urban legend Aubrey Sabala flies in the face of DMCA and compiled a downloadable Best of 2008: Songs Chicks Like. Turns out I like some of them, too (Bon Iver, Frightened Rabbit, The National, Matt and Kim). Ok, I guess most of them. But that’s cool. After all, any San Francisco based Kevin Rose associate has to have some level of taste, right? (Hint: that was a rhetorical question with some hints of satire.)
Edit (8:01 am): Ryan Adams is on this mixtape. I didn’t realize that before posting. I in no way endorse any music on this mixtape, and quite literally am having a hard time not repeatedly showering until I get all the osmotic suck gone. If you feel compelled to toss molotov cocktails my way, I won’t hold it against you.
Listen to this free mixtape to form your own opinions, but the hip-hop scene in Atlanta is long overdue for another breakout. Might be worth checking out his MySpace.
by chance, i saw newbirth brass band in new orleans after my local friend/amateur tourist guide successfully lost me after flying through residential streets in some ward. i’m pretty sure they’re all ok, but i’ve been having an insane time trying to get any reliable news about them as a band.
their live show i saw is still unrivaled in measure of pure energy. i’m not sure how many generations they had on stage, but they were all jamming. if you could buy this disc, i’d tell you to, but you can’t easily. i’m not even sure the emusic store owner is legit.
enjoy this album, on me. if you can find anything else out about this band, please let me know - mattsy@myuzk.com.
I’m Matt. I’ve been obsessed with music - creating, listening, and understanding, since I was very young. My first instrument was the piano, but I found that I could work well with anything I got my hands on. (Guitar, Bass, Harmonica, Ocarina, Accordian, Synth, Mandolin, Ukelele, etc.) It wasn’t too long before I started writing music and eventually I found myself writing video-game tunes for a decent bandwidth RPG resource page, www.warofthemagi.net.
From there I started jamming with local musicians, but found there was a pretty depressing shortage of drummers. Having a friend with a cheap set, I hopped on and after a month or so I was fluent. Drumming has since become a great passion of mine, as I now play drums for three bands(not including my own projects).
With a wide array of instruments, less than mediocre recording equipment, but big ideas and overflowing passion, I will continue to write, record, perform, and make my music heard. I hope the ride is as fun for you as it is for me.
